Charlie Claw’s has been following conservation and, more recently, Ecotourism ideals since the start of the day tours over 28 years ago
. We’re therefore very proud that, for the Year of the Dolphin 2007, we had been given the opportunity and are working very closely with other partners — both local and overseas to create awareness about sustainable dolphin watching and education. Sally is a representative of the Ecotourism Kenya Coast Chapter, which is building more membership of the coast and ESKOM is working towards internationally accepted eco-ratings not only for Hotels & Lodges but for Tour & Excursion Operators.
There’s a code of conduct on board all our dhows. We’re also working with the local schools and involve even the youngest members of the community to contribute their talents in spreading the word through song, dance and art competitions. One of the overseas partners in the project donated computers and equipment to 3 local schools, which continues to be managed by us.
In order to maintain harmony, we request that guests wear suitable clothing when visiting the villages so as not to offend this strongly Muslim community.
